I always had an interest in Pakistani music, food and landscapes. But had never heard about their movies or TV shows until I came across Churails. Although I have seen only one Pakistani show, but I want to believe that it is probably one of the best Pakistani web series. Perfectly executed by Asim Abbasi in terms of casting, acting, styling, thrill, mystery, music and cinematography. They have picked up a real issue, instead of Saas-Bahu, Devar-Bhabhi or Sali-Jija topics. It is nice to see a Pakistani show tackle issues like racism, feminism, etc.

It’s a Zee5 series which promotes women empowerment. It is something we need so that there are no rape cases, there are no female students committing suicides after harassment of professors. We need a show like these so that women stand up against discrimination and violence.

The show is about four women: Sara (Sarwat Gilani Mirza), Jugnu (Yasra Rizvi), Batool (Nimra Bucha) and Zubaida (Mehar Bano) who have had very varied pasts. Each of the women represent a different social class the way they eat, talk and think are also very different from each other. The only thing common between them is that they have all been put down by patriarchy. They have been tired of men’s ideas of ‘what a woman should be’ in their lives.

They come together and start a detective agency to help other women detect their husbands who enter into casual sexual relationships with other women. They start this under a pseudo boutique shop named Halal Designs. Behind the façade of the boutique they start spying on other women’s husbands who are cheating on them. Not very long into the game and they face a huge problem when the story takes a twisted turn and turns into a gripping thriller.

The title of the show “Churails” is apt because the lead characters in the show have done something in the past for which the repressive society tags them as “Churails” or witches. I love the narrations in the show whenever a woman describes her past story. I also love the show because in a way it is bringing the two nations India and Pakistan together. It is necessary if we want to bring the countries closer.

Being a designer, I’m in love with the beautiful frames the shows has. The colour palettes used and the compositions are worlds apart to what we expect in a web series produced in the subcontinent. The show is streaming on ZEE5 and I will encourage you guys to go and watch the show right away and proudly say #MainChurailHoon.

  3. I would love to watch a series based on women and their strength. Churails seem to be exactly that. I really like the way Zee is coming up with so many amazing series to watch.

  4. I have always loved shows with an important vamp in it. For the longest time I wanted to act as one in the serials too but that wasn’t in my destiny. But initially what they showed as vamp qualities, I had them in me anyway … I mean except the planning, killing and poisoning parts.

  5. I really like concepts like these with rampant issues like gender & class bias ; it makes the whole experience of watching such content entertaining & learning as well. We need more such feminine narratives out there.

  6. Ive just finished a women oriented series and was missing it. This one seems very interesting and also of the same topic. Wil check it out.
