Mainstream fashion trends have always been a reflection of the social norms, transforming ideologies, and defining moments of the eras. From the casual worker uniforms of the 40s to the skirts and dresses of the Hollywood ’50s, and the bell-bottoms flowy clothes of the disco 60-70s, fashion has always been a distillation of their particular eras.

Rapidly advancing technology, environmental conscious sustainability, rising minimalistic tendencies, and the total domination of social media being at the forefront for the turn of the century, will be the focus of fashion in the future.

A white-dominated minimalist society, a mirroring of metallic tones in wearable adaptable technology, and accessories to enhance your evermore immersion in the social network by making you always camera-ready are the themes portrayed in this shoot.

With the focus on climate change and sustainability comes the thought of slow-moving luxury fashion, but people would still crave variety. Therein comes wearable technology, allowing a change in colour based on either your internal mood and emotions or on the lighting of your environment.

They might even be able to adapt thermodynamics, allowing you to regulate your temperature depending on your environs. A final step would be a change in the composition of the dress shape, style, feel, and size itself.

The cherry on top of this cake would be the necessity to be camera-ready no matter the time of the day. With the sum total of all of humanity being connected in the future a certainty, people would fall further into the well of self-validation via internet strangers. This directly being a subsequence to always have a spotlight for themselves.

In a 100 years, will fashion make a unique, bold, tech-based impact on clothing? Will historical trends keep repeating? Or will it take a completely brand new unimaginable path? It remains to be seen.

  1. Very interesting thoughts! Yes, it is a real problem to make “fashion” somehow “ethical”.

Because fashion is alsways new in its sense – and so you will always have “old” pieces, which can only end up as waste – that we do not want more than necessary.

I like the idea of changing clothes through wearable technology! Maybe not the solution, but an interesting approach definitely.
