The Mughal Legacy Of Agra

By Aishwarya Iyengar

Agra, uff where do I start? It has the most beautiful and one of the 7 wonders of the world, and mind you it is because of a reason.

This was a planned 2-day trip to Agra. I left from Bangalore to Delhi on a flight at midnight and reached Delhi by 3 am and then took a train to Agra.

Agra was mesmerizing and some of these sights really caught my eye.  They  were some of the highlights of my trip which was a true showcase of the Mughal Legacy.

TOMB OF ITIMAD-UD-DAULAH

The morning of Day 1, I freshened up and headed down to this spectacle on the banks of the river Yamuna.

The beauty of this place was truly mesmerizing and much more enhanced in reality.

It is also described as the ‘Jewel Box’ or Baby Taj. Apparently this was the draft to the mighty Taj Mahal.

There are 4 entryways built of red sandstone with intricate carvings, out of which only one is used as the main entrance. This leads to the main building.

The walls are made up of white marble from Rajasthan encrusted with semi-precious stone decorations –cornelian, jasper, lapis lazuli, onyx, and topaz.

Light penetrates the interior through delicate jaali or screens of intricately carved white marble, which takes you to another era altogether.

I spent about an hour there and apparently my dress matched the beautiful interiors too.

Stay tuned for more on the Mughal Legacy of Agra.
